Overview: The Gond are numerically the most dominant tribe of India. Their homeland extends from the Satpura range down to the Godavari, from Uttar Pradesh (Gonda district) and north Bihar to Andhra Pradesh, and from Maharashtra to Odisha. Though many still speak one of the Gondi languages, most are now bilingual speaking Hindi, Marathi or Telugu depending on their location. The Gonds have scheduled tribe status in most Indian states.
